9. Ordnance Road St John's Wood N.W. July 15th/ '68 My dear Emma, I waited the first post this morning hoping to hear something about Cook, as I am looking for a letter every day, knowing he is being urged to the utmost to settle the business; —I have not however heard & cannot therefore tell you whether there will be any money for you. I wish so much I knew & I am so sorry about Mr. McDonald. I should tell him that you have not the money now, but if he will arrange the affair you will pay him as soon as possible. You will learn from him how much remains to be paid on the loan, he knew Edwin's unhappy disappointments, so that your being left as you are is only the case of hundreds, for unfortunately clergymen's widows are frequently penny-less & perhaps a large family for altho' he had not taken orders he was in a similar position. I will write again to the solicitor today to ask if any thing more has been done about Cook. They know my anxiety about it & will hasten the affairs all they can. Jessie will be home today & they think of going to you next Friday for baby's work, but if that day will not be convenient for you, write a line tonight or tomorrow morning to say so. I will ascertain if possible whether there will be any money for you from Cook. I wonder if Mr. M. has seen Wood since they were at Hemel Hempstead, the more I think of the letter the more odious & unfeeling do I consider him, he has been the cause of half the mischief that taken place. I must post this so will say good bye with love to both. Your affectionate Mama Emma Adcock The subject of this missive is Edwin Adcock, whose birth was registered in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, in the third quarter of 1843. He was the firstborn son of Justinian Adcock (1815, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire – 1856, ditto), an attorney and solicitor, and his wife—the writer of this letter—Emma Catley Adcock (b. about 1820). Justinian Adcock's articles of clerkship still exist, naming him as the son of James Adcock (1779 – 1860), gentleman. On 18 April, 1836, Justinian was made the clerk of solicitor Stephen Adcock of the same town; obviously a paternal relation. By 1842, both he and Stephen are listed in The Law List of county attorneys for Cambridge. Justinian's mother was Susanah Coulsell (1776 – 1872). Justinian Adcock and Emma Catley married in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, in the late summer or early fall of 1842. The 1850 Slater's Directory of Cambridge lists Justinian as solicitor specializing in fire law, working out of 16 Market Street, Cambridge. Their marriage occurred after the 1841 census, but they do appear as a family unit in 1851, when they were living at 29 Market Street, Cambridge. By that time there were three children born to them: Edwin and sisters Jessie (b. before 27 Feb., 1845) and Ellen (b. 27 March, 1849), as well as a 16-year-old clerk, John George Smith, and two servants: Charlotte and Eliza Cook, age 26 and 17 respectively. (Another Adcock son, Cecil, was born in the final quarter of 1852.) On 14 February, 1854, Justinian Adcock signed a four-page Will. Dense with legalese, it set up his wife Emma, the Reverend James Abbot of the county of Lincoln, and James Robinson "of Cambridge in the County of Cambridge, bookbinder," as the trustees his entire estate, which appears to have included multiple copyhold and leasehold properties, securities, as well as plentiful household goods that included plate, books, furnishings, pictures, china, and more. Some of the estate he gave them orders to sell for the most advantageous price and other parts to hold onto and draw income from. His wife was to be allowed to keep whatever of his household goods she wanted for her lifetime. The end game of this trust was that when the youngest of his children reached the age of 21, the estate would be distributed between them. Justinian Adcock died only about two years after making his Will, at the age of 41, in 1856, in Cambridge. In 1861, young Cecil Adcock appears to be a student at a school near St. Andrew the Less, Cambridgeshire. The location of the rest of the Adcocks is unknown, although certainly Emma was living at 9 Ordnance Road, St. John's Wood, by the time this letter was posted in 1868. Edwin married Emma Robinson (b. abt 1841), the daughter of Harrison and Jane Mary Robinson (b. abt. 1802, Anwick, Lincolnshire), on 29 December, 1867, in the parish of Regent's Park St. Mark. Of Emma Robinson's family, little can be ascertained. The father had died before 1851, when the census of Anwick, enumerated Jane Robinson is as a widow and a "landed proprietor," living in Church Yard House with her children Jane (b. 1836), Emma, Louisa (b. 1845), and two domestic servants. In 1861, the household was in the same location, unchanged. Less than a year after her wedding, Emma Robinson Adcock would become a pregnant widow. Edwin Adcock died on 23 March, 1868, in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, almost certainly without ever seeing his son, Claude H. Adcock (probably Haselwood Claude), who was born in Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, in late 1868. The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, notes that Edwin's effects were under £200 when his Will was proved on 11 May, 1869. "Letters of Administration of the Personal estate and effects of Edwin Adcock late of Hemel Hempstead in the County of Hertford Gentleman deceased who died 23 March 1868 at Hemel Hempstead aforesaid were granted at the Principal Registry to Emma Adcock of 75 King Street, East Hammersmith in county of Middlesex, widow and the Relict of the said Deceased she having been sworn." At the time of his death, Edwin Adcock would not have received his share of his father's estate. This would not be distributed until 1873, when his younger brother, Cecil, turned 21. Had he lived, Edwin would have been left a well-off gentleman. As it was, his wife was left in dire financial straights with which her mother-in-law seemed unable to assist in 1868. This may be why Emma wrote to her daughter-in-law that Edwin was much like any dead clergyman who had taken orders, leaving nothing to their families, rather than that he literally was a not-yet-ordained member of the clergy. Three years after receiving this letter from her mother-in-law, the 1871 census of Kensington, London, saw Emma Robinson Adcock living with her 69-year-old mother Jane—a "land owner"—and her three-year-old son Claude, along with a widowed sister, Jane Hughes, and two nieces, Janett and Mary. She disappears from the records afterward either by remarriage or death, although there does not appear to be a death record for her under than name Emma Adcock. Meanwhile, the 1871 census placed her mother-in-law, Emma Catley Adcock, in St. Pancras, London. With her was her daughter Jessie and son Cecil. Emma noted that her income was derived from "house property." Cecil worked as an insurance clerk, probably headed into the legal profession in the footsteps of his father. Cecil, sadly, also never lived to truly enjoy the fruits of Justinian's labor. He died at age 24, in 1876, in Edmonton, Middlesex. In 1881, the census places her a 34 Thornhill Square, Isington, heading a household as a "fund holder" along with unmarried daughters Jessie and Ellen and her widowed 58-year-old sister, Caroline Headly, who was also a fund holder. A decade later, in 1891, the household was unchanged. The house stands today, a pretty Victorian terrace home of three stories with a basement level servant's quarters. Both Emma Cately Adcock and her sister appear to have died before the 1901 census. The two sisters, Jessie and Ellen, had returned to Cambridge by when the census was taken and were living as boarders at 74 Trumpington Street in a Georgian home that is today the University of Cambridge's Godwin Laboratory. The sisters were living off "their own means"—doubtless, the money that their brother Edwin missed out on years earlier. They were still together in April 1911, living at 2 Russell Street, Bath, in a boarding house with other spinsters and widows. Each woman appears to have filled out the census on their own. Both sisters wrote their entries with a clear, strong hand. Once again, the house they lived in remains-- a beautiful Georgian terrace home made of Bath's distinct sand-colored oolitic limestone, is just a few doors down from the today's Queensberry Hotel. Ellen Adcock died in Cambridge in early 1932. Jessie Adcock lived on until early 1938, when her death was also registered at Cambridge. Of Edwin and Emma Robinson Adcock's son Claude, he appears to have first returned to his birthplace, the area of Hemel Hempstead, and become an engineer and millwright. The 1881 census lists a 23-year-old H. C. Adcock, who had been born in Hemel Hempstead, working in that capacity. He married a woman named Elizabeth Rose in the last quarter of 1894 after relocating to Worthing, Sussex. The 1911 census for that place lists Haselwood Claude Adcock, an engineer and millright, with his wife Elizabeth Rose, and son Leonard Claude (b. 1896, Worthing, Sussex), who was an assistant in his father's business. Claude died in early 1943 in Chichester, Sussex.
